9th Annual The Memorial 5K

MEM_5K_FINALa

The Memorial 5k – Run to end cancer. Run to cure children.

The Memorial 5K was conceived in the spirit of Jerry Musco, but runners run in the name of everyone that has battled cancer. The race directors started this run to remember every person taken by this disease and also to celebrate all the survivors. Runners support all who continue their fight.

The race directors have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the wonderful work being done at Boston Children’s Hospital every day by the amazing doctors, nurses and staff members who help so many seriously ill children, and the overwhelming generosity of the Tomorrow Fund. We feel compelled and honored to support these wonderful organizations, and will continue to support the American Cancer Society.

The Memorial 5k is an annual road race event that was formed with the specific goal of raising funds to support the American Cancer Society and Boston Children’s Hospital. All proceeds generated by the event are donated to the The American Cancer Society through their Relay For Life® program and to Boston Children’s Hospital.

The race is scheduled for this Sunday, August 7th at 9 a.m.  It starts and finishes at Johnston Memorial Park in Johnston, RI.

Race Recap: HussDog Jog

On Saturday morning it was off to Pembroke, Massachusetts to take part in the HussDog Jog 5K. I have run this race a couple of times before and each year the race organizers put on a great event while raising funds for an amazing cause.

The race commemorates the passing of Steven R. Hussey by bringing family, friends, and the town of Pembroke together in a celebratory 5k and 2 mile walk!

Proceeds from the race benefit the nonprofit Stroke Rehabilitation and Healing (SRH). SRH’s mission is to raise awareness regarding the challenges met by stroke patients and their families.

Having run the race before, I knew the course details pretty well and recalled how the race features a rather fair mix of flat terrain and rolling hills mixed into the course. The Pembroke Police Department does an outstanding job patrolling the rural, residential course and volunteers handed out water at two different water stops along the course.

Some days you run great and other days not so much. I had a tough time getting my legs really moving in the race and knew about halfway into the run that it wasn’t going to be my best showing. I finished the race with a time of 25:22, good for 8:09/miles. Not an all out terrible result for me, just not my best. That said, I was glad to be able to be a part of this great annual event raising funds for such an a good cause.

Registration is now open for the Union Street Tavern Trot which will be held on September 18th in Windsor, Connecticut. The race is held rain or shine and is a 3.5 mile road and trail race through historic Windsor Center. The race is USATF certified (#CT09017JHP) and is a Manchester Road Race qualifier with electronic chip timing.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the race and the race organizers have added prize money to the top 3 male and female finishers. Last year, over 760 runners descended upon Windsor to take part in this race where organizers try to make the race a great experience leaving runners yearning to come back and race the course the following year.

Kegs of beer have been donated by the suppliers of Union Street Tavern (Harpoon, Guinness, Bud Light, etc.) and a local brewer (Back East) is a sponsor and donates several kegs of their amazing brew! Race participants will be able to stretch out both before and after the race to a band playing for the “party in the parking lot.”

Best of all, the Union Street Tavern Trot raises over $40,000 each year for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for pediatric cancer research. Let’s pack the starting line and raise some funds for this amazing organization!
