Frozen 5K Lives Up to Its Name

Word to the wise: When looking for a January road race in New England see if you can find one called the Warm and Balmy Winter 5K in the hopes that a warm spell will grace you at the starting line and the race will live up to its name.

For those brave runners who made their way to Quincy, Massachusetts this morning for the Frozen 5K, we can all attest to the fact that the race certainly lived up to its name. With race time temperatures just shy of zero and wind chills much colder than that it was a challenge, to say the least, to toe the starting line and head out on the course. Thankfully, the race was a 5K and would be over in a short period of time which was just about the only solace you could find when racing in such extreme cold.

Before making it a few hundred yards past the starting line, my fingers were frozen despite two pairs of gloves and the face covering proved to be a unique obstacle to normal breathing. When I took the face mask down half-way into the race, it then froze and breathing without it was even more of a challenge so the icicle covered mask went back on. Today was a day for layers, more layers and a few more layers but no matter how many shirts or pants you had on, it was freezing!

The course was an out and back run complete with some pretty nice climbing mixed into the course throughout. The course was free from snow and ice on the pavement and a coned off lane provided runners a path free from traffic. A huge amount of gratitude goes out to the Quincy Police Department who had the race course covered perfectly and the officers deserve a lot of praise for also braving the elements so us runners could race in such extreme cold.

Proceeds from the Frozen 5K Road Race benefit the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, helping to fund financial assistance to ensure Y membership, programs and services remain accessible to all.

I finished the Frozen 5K with a time of 25:16, good for 8:08/miles. Not a bad result for the tough running conditions! Once I thaw out completely I might start looking for some warm weather races just to begin to erase the chill of this morning’s run from my memory!

First Annual Edgewood 5K

Sunday morning it was just a quick jump away over to Raynham, Massachusetts for the First Annual Edgewood 5K. Hosted at Edgewood Pool & Tennis Club, the Edgewood 5K was organized by members of the club and featured a great 5K course through the streets abutting the club.

The race featured a nice layout with four left turns making it impossible to get lost on the course and to keep runners honest there were a few, rolling hills mixed into the route.

For the first mile and a half making my way to North Main Street in Raynham I was in first place but noticed a young runner closing in on me. I continued to maintain a rather solid pace but could not maintain the increasing pace my challenger not presented and slipped to second place which is where I finished overall in the race. Even though the field of runners was small, I was quite pleased with how well I ran and felt no sense of disappointment coming in second place overall.

I finished the Edgewood 5K with a time of 23:28, good for 7:33/miles. A great morning of running at a very well organized race that will be sure to continue to grow each year! I look forward to next year’s race already!

Registration is now open for the Duxbury Half-Marathon which will be held in Duxbury, Massachusetts on April 1st! (This isn’t an April Fools joke, we really think you should go register for this race today!)

Runners will run through the historic South Shore village of Duxbury. The course starts at the Duxbury Senior Center on the edge of the town forest along Mayflower Street, originally a Native American trail. The gentle hills prepare you for Bay Road, 2 miles of “heartbreak” hills, and water vistas. You’ll enter “downtown” Duxbury and circle around Standish Shore running along paths the Pilgrims walked on Captains Hill. Captain Myles Standish (the monument) will point the way to the Shipbuilders District and scenic Washington Street. Catch your breath, you have only 4 miles to finish! This route gives you a bit of everything from scenic vistas, beautiful flats and challenging hills. This community fully supports the runners offering you orange slices, jelly beans, water stations and good cheers.

As someone who has been impacted by the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s, I love that this race’s registration fee benefits the Duxbury Senior Center Alzheimer’s Programs. The Duxbury Half-Marathon is sponsored by the Duxbury Friends of the Council on Aging. It would be great to see some faithful readers at the starting line to help raise funds for an amazing program.

Runners will receive a race shirt along with their registration fee and as an added bonus Duxbury bay oysters will be available at the finish line, as well!
