The Jamie Fund 5K Road Race and Walk

ImageRegistration is now open for The Jamie Fund 5K Road Race & Walk. Please join The Running Griffin at this race to be held in Mansfield, Massachusetts on August 24, 2013. You can click here to register online.

The Jamie Fund Organization believes it is important to educate typically developing children about acceptance of the special needs children in their communities. They endeavor to create and maintain an infrastructure which would provide the opportunity for others to participate in our existing programs and/or develop similar initiatives meeting the criteria of our charter. Additionally, they endeavor to provide programs, tools, funds and training for effective development of these programs wherever likeminded individuals and communities need them.

The Jamie Fund was created to help make a difference, first in Mansfield and then throughout other cities and towns that face similar issues and do not know where to turn for help.

So be sure to register for The Jamie Fund 5K Road Race and Walk today and I look forward to running with you there to support this great cause!

Janji: Run for Another

ImageAt the runner’s expo at the Providence Marathon, I met Dave who is one of the founders of Janji.

Launched in May 2012 by two college runner, Janji is a Boston based brand of performance running apparel that helps battle the global food and water crisis. Sold in over 80 specialty running stores across the country and online, each piece of apparel provides nutritional medicine, clean water, or seeds for farming through one of the five organizations Janji partners with. Each piece of apparel is designed after a country’s flag and proceeds then help that country. For instance, when a runner buys Janji’s Kenya running shorts it gives a season’s worth of water to a Kenyan family.

On the way to the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Mike and Dave had an idea: what if they could connect runners around the country to solve one of the world’s most serious problems? By the time they came home from the track meet, Janji was born.

Mike and Dave knew runners like themselves were charitable. But they saw that philanthropic running only begins — and unfortunately ends — on race day. They want Janji to change that. Through Janji’s high performance apparel, runners can fund solutions and raise awareness for the global food and water crisis in a meaningful and lasting way. Now, rather than racing just one day for a cause, runners can give back through everyday training.

Janji’s goal is to create a community dedicated to running for another. That was Mike and Dave’s goal on that bus, and that’s what Janji will always be about.

CRR Summer Fun Run Series

Image

Thanks to Joe Gillis and his team of volunteers from the Colonial Road Runners for putting on last night’s CRR Summer Fun Run Series in Raynham. The weekly Monday night run is a 3.25 mile course that each week allows runners to race against themselves to see the improvements that can be made over the course of the summer. About 90 runners showed up for last night’s run which is hands down the best bargain around costing only $2 per week which includes the timed race, water, Gatorade and even a beer post-race.

Last night certainly felt like summer was upon us with the temperature in the 70’s and humidity at 90%.

I finished last night’s CRR Summer Fun Run Series with a time of 24:43 or 7:36/mile.

Evan’s Run 10k

ImageAs part of the Grand Prix Series for the Thirsty Irish Runners, yesterday it was off to Norwell, Massachusetts for the 13th Annual Evan’s Run. The race features both a 5K run and walk and a 10K run through some beautiful, scenic residential neighborhoods of Norwell. Runners pass by some rather impressive estates and the course is a remarkable terrain of some challenging hills that both allow for some tough climbing but also some downhills where the legs can let loose.

The course is a really well supported 6.2 miles with volunteers at turns, water stops along the way and even a DJ playing some music as you climbed the last hill of the course.

Even though I race the day before and am in the winding down stage of marathon training, I felt relatively good for Evan’s Run and finished with a time of 49:58 which is good for 8:03/miles. My time for last year’s Evan’s Run was 50:38 so it was nice to see some improvement over last year!

About Evan Henry Foundation

The Evan Henry Foundation for Autism is a nonprofit organization that has been established in memory of Evan Henry. Evan was an 11 year old child from Norwell Massachusetts who was diagnosed with autism and who accidentally drowned in July, 2000. Evan’s family and friends would like him to be remembered as a happy and loving child who taught others the true meaning of patience and compassion. Autism occurs in as many as 1 in 500 individuals and interferes with the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Autism is the third most common developmental disability. Through this foundation we intend to accomplish the following goals.

 1. To fund programs and/or projects which will benefit individuals with autism and their families.

2. To promote awareness and education by funding educational programs and research related to autism.

3. To promote financial assistance to those who are caring for an autistic child / family member to improve their level of functioning.

The funds from this foundation will be awarded to nonprofit organizations that provide services to children and families affected by autism or individuals on a case by case basis.
